A Persuasive Essay of Academic Freedom In my argument essay, I believe that Academic Freedom is important to everyone. The right of academic freedom means that a university cant tell its faculty members what topics they can research, or teach about, or discuss. So this right encourages the development of new knowledge, and supports research that might result in new discoveries in the future, by protecting researchers from intimidation or censorship. A particular research topic might seem to an observer pointless or far theoretical to produce anything useful, but that cant be proven until it is analyzed. The right to academic freedom doesnt require the university to financially support every bit of research that every faculty member†¦show more content†¦The legal definition is related to the professional definition, but with its own framework and rules. It involves both elements of constitutional and contract law, and reflects an attempt to reconcile basic constitutional prin ciples with prevailing views of academic freedoms social and intellectual role. The danger of such guidelines is clearly stated as the political or ideological views come from the diversion of academic criteria of the chosen scholarly profession. Also Political Discrimination, At Metropolitan College in Colorado, for example, a professor of political science threatened a lawsuit alleging hostile work environment after she had allegedly been targeted by conservative students for her course content and teaching style.† In August 2004, the college president issued a statement affirming the professors Academic Freedom in light of student and legislative attacks on her practice. Courts struggle with the law governing the tensions between faculty and student free speech rights in the classroom, and the results are murky at best. While courts continue to lip service to the deference owed to academic decisions within colleges and universities, the application of the law to the facts s uggests otherwise.
